Before Robotech, there was The Super Dimension Fortress Macross, which drummed up some excitement in Japan when it initially publicized in 1982. A joint wander between activity house Studio Nue, publicizing firm Big West and creation organization Tatsunoko, Macross was an unforeseen hit, starting a wave of toys, model packs and other stock.

This achievement got the enthusiasm of American TV organization Harmony Gold, who acquired the rights for Macross in 1984. At the time, model unit organization Revell had been purchasing the rights to offer model robots from a scope of Japanese shows, and was offering them under the aggregate name Robotech Defenders.
With the energized TV show He-Man And The Masters Of The Universe (1983) demonstrating a hit at the time, and basically serving as a normal half-hour advert for Mattel's connected line of toys, Harmony Gold had a thought. It could unite Revell's line of mecha packs with Macross and offer it under a solitary name - Robotech.
