How To: Bike Set-up to Increase your Skill, Speed and Confidence out on the Trails

Here are some set-up tips to personalize your ride and help you get the best out of what you've got every time you hit the trail.

1. Tires - Start at 30psi, and test on your local trail to find pressures that work for you. Check it on every ride. Too hard and you'll lose traction, too soft and you risk pinch flats and instability.

2. Saddle Height - For riding downhill and practicing skills, slamming the saddle down and out of the way will allow you to move more freely.

3. Brakes - Your index finger should meet with the end of the lever for optimal control. Your levers should be in line with your arms when seated - you may have to move your brakes inboard.

4. Suspension - Aim for 20 to 30 per cent of available travel when wearing your riding kit. Set the front while stood in the attack position, and the rear when seated. Rebound damping should feel controlled but not sluggish.

5. Pedals - If you're starting out, practice on flats. With clip-in pedals, it's easy to learn bad habits such as pulling up instead of transferring bodyweight.
