How to Handle Uphill Turns with your Mountain Bike

Tight uphill and switchback turns can be awkward and can bring your ride to a grinding halt. You'll need to keep pedaling to maintain your speed and get your weight distribution just right to avoid either tire losing traction.

1. Entry - Stay seated and get into a gear that is appropriate for your exit speed early, you don't want to stall or spin out through the corner. Enter the corner as wide as you can to make the turn as shallow as possible.

2. Turn - Get as low as you can by dropping your chest to the bars to keep front wheel traction. Keep pedaling, stay wide and lean into the corner. Look up and out of the corner all the way through.

3. Exit - Keep your weight as low as possible and your chest down. Stay relaxed and keep your pedaling power consistent using the whole trail to exit.

Tip: Any slow techy trail can feel hit and miss. If you get it wrong, it's likely to be a simple error of momentum, position or line. Work it out and get back up to gain cornering consistency.
